About STORCITO:
Imagine a future where Europe’s rural communities lead the way in fighting climate change. Safer from wildfires, powered by clean energy, and connected through smart, eco-friendly transport.
That’s the vision behind STORCITO!
Funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, STORCITO brings together people, ideas, and innovations from across Europe to support the just and green transition of rural areas. From mountain villages to coastal towns, we’re working hand in hand with local actors to co-develop solutions that protect the environment, increase energy independence, and create new models for sustainable mobility.
At its heart, STORCITO is about empowering rural communities, making sure they’re not just included in Europe’s climate goals, but that they become drivers of change.
Objectives
STORCITO aims to:
- Support the transition of rural areas towards inclusive and climate-neutral futures.
- Develop technical, social, and organizational innovations tailored to local challenges.
- Pilot three case studies across diverse biogeographical regions to test real-world solutions.
- Deliver replicable models and tools for other rural communities across Europe.
- Contribute to the EU’s climate neutrality, social inclusion, and territorial cohesion goals.
Our approach
We recognise that no two rural regions are the same. That’s why STORCITO follows a place-based approach, adapting its solutions to the needs and strengths of each territory.
The project combines:
- Digital technologies (like smart collars for livestock or energy dashboards)
- Nature-based solutions (e.g., grazing strategies to prevent wildfires)
- Community engagement (through co-design workshops, trainings, and local governance models)
- Everything is built with and for the people who live and work in Europe’s rural areas.
Where it happens
STORCITO will implement three real-world case studies across six countries:
- Wildfire prevention and monitoring – Atlantic & Mediterranean regions
- Community-based renewable energy systems – Boreal, Atlantic & Continental areas
- Climate-neutral and inclusive mobility solutions – Boreal & Atlantic regions
Why it matters
Rural communities make up 30% of Europe’s population and manage 80% of its territory. Yet they often face disproportionate risks from climate change and limited access to innovation. STORCITO helps to close that gap, making Europe’s green transition inclusive, practical, and fair for all regions.
